Nursery Trees of Quercus acutissima Carruth(Kunugi)

November 4, 2011

We’ve completed the package of total 5 boxes containing nursery trees of Quercus acustissirma Carruth(Kunugi) for about 100 after cleanout as well as cared weed. We felt bit lonely because we watched from the beginning, its growth, conditions, etc. We hope they all make strong steps for the growth in their home land of Noto region. Today is the date for returning back to Noto. See pictures:

Kunugi plants will soon leave from Tokyo after full 2 years of settings. It was a rather quick decision that these plants will return back to Noto region, one year earlier than original plan. The plantation ceremony will take place on November 6, 2011 and name of the place is Oraccha Forest in Noto region. The leaves have started to change its color, and it all falls soon. We feel bit lonesome that it will not possible to watch the fresh tops in early next year. We hope these Kunugi trees will expand their roots in the Satoyama of Noto and we wish their steady growth. We will prepare for packing those plants soon. See pictures:

Feeling smell from Autumn breeze, those nursery trees of Kunugi seemed relaxed after the strong heat summer. Now, it’s a time that the leaves will change its color to yellow from green depending on the temperatures day by day. It all falls down when winter comes, we believe we have to provide good care to these nursery trees to get the fresh top in early Spring next year. See pictures:

Most of nursery trees have grown up without any serious trouble despite of hot and heat sunny days during the month of August. To escape from those strong heat and sun shine, we replaced the nursery pods. It helped the reduction of leaf scorch. It has decided that these nursery trees will return to their home-land of Noto region in November. See pictures:

Nursery trees are steadily growing despite of unstable weather conditions. Last year, we found worm eaten but this year, the damage is nothing greater than last year. It maybe because of such high temperature every day, worms are away on action. We found lots of young green shoots among the growing leaves. Those Kunugi trees will return to Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture, their home land, this year. We wish their growth for the better material of Mr. Ohno’s charcoal in future. Until then, we want to take care them in our garden, Tokyo. See pictures:

All nursery Kunugi trees have been replaced to plastic bottles after naturalization, and we could see the growth by watching leaves every day. Because of the strong sun shine in the past days, some leaves have damaged from burning by the strong sun shine. To escape the damage of strong sun shine, we have moved the pods to the dark side of the garden. We wish that they will overcome this summer’s heat. See pictures:

Weeds have covered all over among the nursery trees of Greenwave garden. We’ve conducted nursery bed, pod change half in last month and therefore, young fresh leaves have grown with healthy steps. This time we did nursery bed, pod change remaining, in fact, we’ve completed everything. We used the all pet-bottles to be recycled for the nursery bed, pod purpose. Rain water will remain in the bottom area of PET bottle every time when rain falls hard. We have to look care all bottles after the rainy days to escape root rot. See pictures:

April 17, 2011 Nursery bed pot-change

This day, Sunday, was very hot with the strong sun-shine and we’ve conducted the works to change the nursery bed, pot-change for the Kunugi.
Charcoal Master, Mr. Ohno -san told us the importance and necessity of cutting the roots of nursery trees of Kunugi which will help for the growth of plants. To do this, we have been collecting plastic-bottles for the recycle use of nursery bed pots. The cap of plastic-bottles were also collected as the supporting activity of Eco-cap action. We found many fresh tops in every pot since the last observation, several weeks back. It seemed they all enjoy accepting enough sun shine and surely expanding the growth. We combined soils of black dirt, red and leaf mold in adding to the original pod soil. Since we took care each pod by hands, we anticipate very much of the growth. See pictures:

Snow falling in Tokyo and it all covered the garden of Green Wave to white. It was necessary to take snow out from all nursery pots. When we finished clearing the snow out, it became fine weather. We’ve talked this topic to Mr. Ohno, Charcoal maker specialist, and he explained “in general, plant(s) has natural functional capability to judge, how many hours of sun-shine absorbed, and then it will give each plant for the growth. Therefore, clearing the snow from the pot(s) made them happy for gaining the valuable sun-shine.” We felt little comfortable to hear this and we prayed that those nursery pots will surely grow with germination in coming Spring. We plan to replace all pots by next month. See pictures:

Most of leaves fall and we found buds of Kunugi trees, we anticipate to looking for Spring. In the month of March, we will start changing seed-plots, cutting the roots and replace those plots to a larger one for the further growth. After Winter season is over, we plan to replace all plots for the growth. See pictures:

Most of leaves have been falling to the ground and branches seemed slim, however, we found there are many blossom buds. The winter season is just around the corner and we wish that those little plants will get through low temperature condition of Tokyo because they are from Noto region-colder than Tokyo. Mr. Ohno was kind enough to give instructions in Noto when we were there during this month. We will change pots of these plants in March, next year. See pictures:

Heat summer and temperature these days got eased by this date. We should be thankful for the good crop this year too for the Japanese Persimmon tree at the Green Wave garden. There are plenty of persimmon plums with orange color giving us that soon the autumn is around the corner. We plan to participate plantation event in Ishikawa Pref. during this coming November and bring some of nursery plants from this garden, raised in Tokyo. Wishing that they will grow in Ishikawa Prefecture too. See pictures:

Facing to the severe difficulties, mostly with the extreme heat during the summer, those nursery plants are still aggressive. Every day, morning and evening, we spray plenty of water, however, we see that soil of each pot will dry up so fast. Very unfortunate, but we found one pot that leaf color changed to brown! Due to this heat condition, we could not find even any insects which only eat leaves. See pictures:

Hot summer days continued with the temperature around 30 C in these days, and those nursery trees were adjusting themselves from the strong sunshine, adult trees were making the balance of strong sun shine. During summer days, we have been giving plenty of water, twice a day spraying. It seemed that worm-eaten have not seen during the hot summer days. See picture:

It has past about one month from the last observation. Bit surprised that all leafs were so rapidly grew and looked bigger, besides, every stalks have also grew and bigger. This time, the problem is vermiculation! Leafs were damaged from the vermiculation and were expanded to many of the nursery trees. We’ve heard from the people of Noto region that they are not damaged from vermiculation. We are doing the same treatment of nursery trees(Tokyo and Noto). They say insectan(plant animal) might be young worn of scarab or moth. We could not find the definite kind of insectan, however, we do not want to use insecticides to nursery trees. See pictures:

Leafs have grown from two to four and six after the germination and have covered the seed-bed all over. This means it is time to do the naturalization. Almost every day during the Golden Week, weather condition were fine and temperature were also very high which made good benefits to those nursery plants for their growth. Fresh tops in the seed-bed showed the rapid growth. Nursery tree of Quercus acutissima Carruth(Kunugi) is the taproot type and thus, even such small trees, they have deep root growth, some spread out the roots out from the tray. We expect of effects of root Air-pruning and resettled(cutting) the every root of these plants upon naturalization. It was total of 89 nursery pods we could prepare this time. We plan to do the 2nd naturalization soon. See pictures:

Finally, we found the germination of Quercus acutissima Carruth(Kunugi) all over in the seed-bed. It was so nice and pleased with the relieved feelings on this germination. The timing of germination this time is very much similar to what we did for Ubamegashi(Quercus Phillyraeoides) and Tabunoki(Machilus thunbergii, currently planted in Tokyo’s Sea Forest project land. Looked like tsukushi’s new flush(Equisetum arvense or Horsetail), we see a lot of germination in seed-bed. It is anticipated we could get many naturalization from the seed bed. See pictures:

Almost one month has past since we did seeding the acorn of Quercus acutissima Carruth(Kunugi). Normally, the land temperature in Tokyo is warmer than Noto Region during the winter season, however, surface of seed-bed were freeze hard by the frost in these days. We placed the leaf soil combined with dead leaves to protect from frost condition. We are hoping that the plants will grow successfully. See pictures:

Sowing the seeds, acorn of Kunugi trees from Noto was done in the garden of Green Wave in Tokyo. We prepared soil quality with the following; first layered with red soil boulder strewn and second layered by leaf soil with poultry manure, on top of that, we placed acorns seeded and over molded the soil. Irrigation was done every day and anticipate for the fresh top in later date. See pictures:
