NPO Green Wave Activity Report for FY2023

Introduction

NPO Green Wave has been working on a variety of projects this year with the aim of developing a sustainable environment and community, and in fiscal year 2023 we were able to develop a particularly important activity at the request of Komatsu Matere Co. Here we would like to report to you our main achievements.

1. Soil improvement project in the Noto Peninsula

This fiscal year, NPO Green Wave implemented a soil improvement project in the Noto Peninsula in collaboration with Komatsu Matere Co. The project aimed to improve the productivity of local agriculture by improving soil quality through the use of advanced materials provided by Komatsu Matere.

Activities:
  • Soil analysis of the site and formulation of an improvement plan
  • Establishment of test plots using Komatsu Matere materials
  • Collaboration with local agricultural corporations to conduct demonstrations
Results:
  • Improved soil fertility and water retention capacity for better farming conditions
  • Improved crop yields and soil quality
  • High evaluation from local agricultural corporations
  • Building relationships with farmers in Ishikawa Prefecture, Nanao City, and Notojima

2. Activities to promote greenbiz

NPO Green Wave focused on promoting greenbiz, an environmentally friendly agricultural material developed by Komatsu Matere. This material is positioned as an important tool to enhance agricultural sustainability.

Activities:
  • Conducting joint projects with Tokyo University of Agriculture
  • Provide on-the-job training programs for farmers
Project Outcomes:
  • Collaboration with Tokyo University of Agriculture has demonstrated the effectiveness of greenbiz, and many farmers are considering to use
  • Contributed to the promotion of agriculture in Komatsu Matere and helped spread sustainable agriculture
  • Productivity improvements were confirmed at farms using greenbiz, and are expected to be expanded in the future

How we started greenbiz

Global warming and the heat island effect is currently happening all around us. This phenomenon is getting worse every year, and it is having a great impact on our lives. Looking around the world, the best thing we can do is to protect and increase the number of forests that are disappearing every day. And in Japan, the best thing we can do is to maintain the existing forests and actively use thinned lumber.

greenbiz is a recycled material made by effectively utilizing industrial waste from fabric dye in factories. It is also used as building material that can be widely used for rooftops, wall greenery, road surface blocks, and other applications. This has made it possible to simultaneously improve the urban environment and make effective use of waste, opening a new avenue for our environmental protection activities.

3. Activity report of Green Wave Ishikawa

Green Wave also has a base in Ishikawa Prefecture to support the spread of greenbiz. In addition, we are currently working on a satoyama development project in Minami-Kaga. Throughout Japan, satoyama are being devastated, and the risk of animal damage by bears and wild boars and landslides caused by heavy rains is increasing. In order to promote the utilization of natural broadleaf trees and raise issues, we are cooperating with KUMALAB of the University of Tokyo.

4. Outlook for the future

Challenge to a new stage

After 16 years of experience, Green Wave is now moving on to a new stage.

We have grown together with the companies, researchers, and artisans who have supported us. While our focus in the past has been on trees and plants, through our work thus far we have realized that the soil is of utmost importance. As nutrient-rich soil is dwindling, Green Wave will also focus on ¡Èsoil improvement¡É (¡ÈCarbon Farming¡É or ¡ÈRegenerative Agriculture¡É in English). We are committed to ¡Èsoil improvement¡É (¡ÈCarbon Farming¡É or ¡ÈRegenerative Agriculture¡É in English). The time has come to take action to protect the earth so that future generations can live in peace.

Vision for the Future

We will foster a new cycle that traps CO2 in the soil, creates nutrient-rich soil, and grows safe and secure food. Join us in creating a new initiative to restore a clean planet.

Lastly

NPO Green Wave will continue to strive for environmental protection and the realization of a sustainable society. We look forward to your continued support.
